Sounds like we are of a similar age - I suppose there is a sort of of
"Golden Age" type thing when you look back on the models of the late
seventies.

Yes, something did happen in the late seventies.  The introduction of
the "new style" technic (as opposed to the old style large gears and
white axles) and the minifigures were both large events, especially with
the addition of the space and castle themes.  I was five years old when
the minifigs were introduced, which was a bit hit with me.

I think my favourites were the Mobile Crane and the Motorbike,
although I remember the fork lift truck, the small go kart, and the
8860 car chassis with great fondness as well.

I only had the forklift and the mobile crane of the above.  The forklift
was kinda crude and not too playable, but it did have some interesting
alternate models.  The mobile crane was one of my favs as well.  I
tinkered a lot with it, e.g. making a larger chassis with more axles.

My all time fav was the yellow tow truck (8846?), which I could build by
heart -- from the top, bottom or any other direction!  I still think it
is a very good design.

However, I can be certain I got no help with them, as the rest of my
family are not so great when it comes to mechanical things! I used to
really enjoy it when mechanically minded people would visit our
house, and I got to show the models to someone who wasn't a
mechanical philistine :-)

When we had visitors at our house, I always made them come by my room to
check out the various LEGO models on my shelf, even if were mechanically
inclined or not.  :-)
