As a child, I only had one of the large, bulky 4,5V motor with black
housing and built in gear. I actually found it pretty useful, but
then again I never put my hands on any other kinds om motors.
The most useful feature of the motor was the strength and durability
of it. I put it through all kinds of stress. For example, I made a
fan by gearing the output of the motor up by a series of four
40t-to-8t gear ratios. This setup required so much tourque that I had
to manually start the fan by hand after turning on the motor --
otherwise it would stall. Once started, the fan rotated so quickly
that any movement of the contraption would cause the blades and/or the
chassis to be torn apart.
I haven't tried anything like this with the current 9V gear motor, but
I would be surprised if it was strong enough. In retrospect, it would
naturally be more efficient to use a non-geared output motor to make a
fan, but I didn't have such a motor at the time!
