I disagree with that Period you’ve got there. The recent film The Downfall seemed to be fairly well received http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3675318.stm

That brings to my mind another discussion that I would love to have in this forum. It involves the penchant Liberals have for trying to understand evil.

Are you saying that trying to understand things is a bad idea?

Just evil.

At one point schizophrenics were considered “evil” and “possessed” and even if they had done no harm to anyone they would be persecuted and worse. Fortunately people have learnt to understand that form of “evil” and it is now rightfully considered an illness.

So are you implying that one day we will totally understand evil?

It is a very dangerous and foolish notion, as exemplified by this movie (I assume, as I read the intro to the article: “A movie which depicts Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s softer side has topped the German box office.”) I haven’t the time to fully lay out my case, but it is an issue I’d love explore with those with whom I probably will disagree.

I’ve not seen it nor heard much about it.

He didn’t experience the Nazis as far as I know

Melvin Kaminsky served in North Africa during WW2 with the US Army according to Wik.

Which is not exactly having direct encounters with the Nazis worst abuses but I should have checked first.

Would an outsider from USian be any better ;)
You’re right, but I’m not making swastika spaceships, either!

I was commenting on your selection of Australians and the implied cultural bias that could easily be considered to have. I’ve not made one either but I am Australian.

Not posting it to 1000Steine is respecting the (probable) views of the majority of its audience. Lugnet has a more diverse readership and this balance is why it is acceptable to post imagery and satire like Al’s or Richie’s here. It has nothing to do with oblivion or lack thereof.

Just some thoughts,

Yeah, but Tim, the LUGNET audience also includes minors. I see absolutely no difference in not posting in 1000Steine out of respect for Germans, and not posting to LUGNET out of respect for Germans. And that is my whole point in a nutshell.

JOHN

So are you proposing that we should censor stuff for a minority population? That goes against most of the arguments I’ve seen you make before. I’m glad to see you’re adopting a less Conservative perspective on things ;)

Not at all. I am proposing self-censorship; in other words acting civilized and responsibly. It is the same old stuff I’ve been ranting about for years:-)

As for minors, I don’t see that they are going to be in any way harmed by blatant satires of Nazism. Perhaps you could elaborate on this point?

Satire is a mature kind of humor which is often if not always beyond minors. Good satire assumes a knowledge base that minors usually haven’t reached yet. So without any true understanding of a satirical MOC of a swastika, they just see a MOC of a swastika and a tacit understanding that use of such symbols is normative. Minors see AFOLs post using expletives. Ahh, that must be okay, too.

Posting on the net is analogous to having a face to face conversation. Responsible adults wouldn’t have adult themed conversations within earshot of a minor, nor would they engage in adult activities in view of a minor. So why does all personal responsibility go out the window when it comes to the net?

JOHN

(...) LOL then why bother trying to understand why Al posted this MOC in the first place? (19 years ago, 24-Dec-05, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, lugnet.off-topic.fun, FTX)
