You're on the right track, but (if you'll forgive me) I think your
assessment misses the real problem. Bush and Ashcroft and Cheney and the
rest (and Clinton et al, to be fair) know EXACTLY what rights are, and
that's why they're working so hard to curtail them. Bush is dumb, yes, but
it's dangerous to dismiss his agenda as his simple misunderstanding of basic
elements of government.

Well now you're just talking about fantasy land. I wouldn't say that the
Republicans won't field a black presidential candidate--Colin Powell would
have been a popular choice if he'd been interested. Elizabeth Dole also had
rumblings of possible candidacy before the 2000 campaign. Granted,
Republicans won't nominate Al Sharpton or Susan Sarandon, but...
