There are only two *effective* parties, unless one wants to count the
indirect effect of altering the national debate (Greens and Libertarians).
But yes, the Republicrats have put up barriers to organizing new parties.
It's bad because it suffactes new ideas, but good because you don't get so
fractured that you end up with paralysis of action (but only two seems
overdoing it to me).

The first woman president will most likely be a Republican. The first black
president will also most likely be a Republican. This is not the complement
that it would seem: conservatives feel the most threatened by change or
variation. Thus, they will more stridently oppose women or blacks from the
opposite ranks. One from their own ranks is reassuring, while Democrats
*won't* feel threatened (as much) and will be more willing to vote for them.
