You might want to use a sliding mechanism on the pen to eliminate the
arc that it draws. It will skew the measurement (no longer quite linear
scale) but not so badly that it will be useless.
Straightening the lines out will help make the curves easier to compare
(a square wave would be square).

| (...) Thanks, A sliding mechanism was one of the early failed attempts. It proved too complicated requiring several linkages. Actually, it does not really matter that the pen draws an arc rather than a vertical line because the brain can interpret (...) (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.robotics)
