A sliding mechanism was one of the early failed attempts. It proved too
complicated requiring several linkages.
Actually, it does not really matter that the pen draws an arc rather
than a vertical line because the brain can interpret that it's supposed
to look like a square wave even if the sides are curved.
There's also no need to make elaborate measurements. By superimposing
transparencies of the tracings made by different air compressors, it is
quite easy through pattern recognition, to pick out which is the better
air compressor.
