Thanks for your patience.
Just received 4 of the lil' compressor pumps and have built and tested John Morgan's
new double-acting (*correct terminology*) compressor.
Unfortunately, the design does not seem to work out in practice. After just a couple of
cycles of pneumatic action, the motor would seize up. It appears to lack torque due to
it being geared up for speed. The chain link would also break. So it wasn't really
possible to carry out a complete test on the design as it is.
I took the liberty of replacing the 40T gear with a 24T one and it performed better. It
was then abe to get the complete tracing of 4 cycles of penumatic action. The chain
link would still break up occasionally. Even with this modification, however, its
performance was no better than the Standard compressor.
I notice there seems to be a problem getting the right gear ratio to work the pumps
with the new 9v motor, as it is already geared down internally. If you try to gear it
up to speed up the pumping action, you lose torque. On the other hand, compressors
built with the old standard motor seem to whizz along effortlessly. Or are my eyes
deceiving me?
