I wish that were possible, but those responsible just won't learn from
merciful acts. You idea would have merit if we weren't talking about
religious zealots who fallow a faulty code of honor. Fanatics can't be
reasoned with. The key is to stop them from achieving their goal. If
you don't believe me, I'll just post a couple of names here to
illustrate my point: David Koresh and Tim McVeigh.

You don't specifically state this, but it seems the suggestion is that Koresh
was a terrorist.  You do know that that's incorrect, don't you?  And further,
that he (and his) was(were) victimized by the US people -- rather than the
other way around, as with these terrorists?

Chris

No, I make the suggestion that Koresh and his followers were fanatics. You don't
have to be a terrorist to be fanatical. I'm pointing out that misguided
religious folk make excellent fanatics.

Give people what they want, and they will follow you without question. We've
seen this repeated over and over throughout history. It can be as simple as
giving people economic relief (Hitler), or love and comfort and a place to
connect with others of similar beliefs (Jonestown, Koresh), or even 'relief from
oppression' (bin Laden, Saddam Hussein). It's the job of a good leader to
realize what the people need and to provide it, even at the expense of others.
There are few effective leaders who don't see the truth in my previous
statement. Like it or not, Hitler was the most effective leader of the 20th
century. He sacrificed anything he thought was needed to futher Germany's
successful world positioning. He lied, murdered, and was as ruthless as ruthless
can be, but in the end, he kept the promises he made: economic recovery and a
return to power in the world. No, I don't idolize him. I merely state fact.
