You should measure with a ruler or with lego parts (or for detailed parts
people have resorted to calipers). With a plate and a brick, you can make
pretty accurate measurements based on wall thickness (4 ldu), plate thickness
(8 ldu), distance from edge to stud center (10 ldu), stud diameter (12 ldu),
distance from stud to stud (20 ldu).
I finally got a chance to download this part and look at it. It needs at
least two major fixes:
The 2X2 stud corner cut-outs should be "off-set" from the studs on the top by
20 ldu toward the corner in each direction. This is why there is way to much
leftover space on the edges of your cut-outs.
On the bottom of the L-shaped pit, the long leg of the L 86 ldu wide, but only
has two columns of studs. It is 246 ldu long, and has 12 rows of studs. The
short leg of the L is 26 ldu wide and has two colums of studs. It is 126 ldu
long and has 5 rows of studs.
I would also point out that the side and top edges of this part are quite
rounded, not sharp edges. Since this curve takes up 10 ldu of space, it
should really be modeled. This would be a difficult fix, though.
I think this part without the underside would be a candidate for a "needs
work" tag. It's pretty hard to imagine using this in a way that would expose
the underside.
This would be a nice part to have added, so I hope you can take the time to
make these corrections.
