being unfamiliar with their possibilities and use, myself included. Some of
the newer lego models do remarkable things with these, and they can be put
to great use making very rigid and compact gear assemblies. Recently I've
used some in a fairly limited way for exactly this purpose and in many cases
they are superior to the standard beams and braces approach.

I don't mind SOME of the new style smooth beams.  My complaint is that the
new style smooth beams and axle/rod/flex tube connectors have almost
completely displaced "traditional" technic components.  It's like the new
"Technic" is a whole different product line.  There are fewer and fewer
traditional Technic pieces in these sets - and without the older style
technic pieces there is little or NO cross line compatability.

As stated before, just TRY to mount ANYTHING constructed out of new style
Technic pieces onto a base plate without using old style holed beams to
interface between the two. Without holed studded beams (even as small as
1x2) there is NO compatability between the current Technic line and bricks.
Having said that, note that there are few sets with substantial numbers of
holed, studded beams in the current Technic inventory.

Newer Technic sets have only slightly more compatability with Lego bricks
than K'Nex pieces have.  In THAT sense TLC has gotten far from their stated
purpose of cross-line compatability.  Roboriders and Bionicles have very
little compatability with Lego Bricks.  The new Technic, focused on axle/rod
and connectors resembles K'Nex more than Lego in my opinion.

From my point of view this means I'm no longer buying "Lego" parts - where
bricks work with Technic and even downward.  I'm now buying "Lego" bricks
and "Lego" Technic parts- decreasing the value and potential of both in my
mind.  Ironically, this only INCREASES the value of older Lego Technic sets
and beams in the secondary market - a market that TLC is NOT making any
money from.
