Which is nice if you can afford $120 plus sets.  But what about the
kid who wants to get started in Technic but can't come up with that
kind of coin?

Simple. They have to suffer just like the rest of us lower middle
class folk did when we wanted the larger sets. Save up the money-it's
the only way to buy what you have your eye on.

Two problems:

1) A current problem with Technic (which even I can see just poking around
looking for Castle stuff) is that there are very few <$30 Technic sets
that are not some kind of Tech Play.  If people have to shell out over
$100 to get started in a theme, I don't think they will[1].  Therefore,
there won't be people who want the larger sets[2], since they have no
experiece with Techic to begin with.

2) I don't think most kids are going to save up >$100 for a small toy like
Lego.  Maybe a bicycle, maybe a video game system, but a small plastic
toy?  Back in the misspent days of my youth I only bought sets that sold
for around $20.  More than that is a lot of money to a child.  From my
parents, I could perhaps anticipate a large set or two at birthdays and
Christmases, but if I wanted Lego during the rest of the year, it had to
come from sets costing $20 or less.  There's a big psychological
difference between spending $100 on ten sets over six months and spending
$100 on one set all at once.

[1] Mindstorms seems to be an exception.  On the other hand, RIS sets seem
to be a lot more flexible than the current mainline Technic offerings.

[2] Trains has this problem as well. . .

(...) Really? The demand to release sets that weren't exclsively vehicles has existed for quite a while now.
