Oh.  I just figured it out.  The breathing-device thingies must extract
oxygen etc. from water on-the-fly (maybe that's how they can be so small)
and they couldn't do that from the gas.

Besides, the Jedi deep-breathing body-control trick is so cool and mystic.

As opposed to the mitochondria (whatever it was), which was just
Star-Trek-particle-of-the-week-ish.
