My favorite scenes were the Sand people cheering after they started
sniping the racers and when Jabba pushes the little critter of the
balcony, totally twisted.

I *hated* the bit with the sand people.  It was *so* corny.  The idea that
the sand people would be considered a "road hazard" is fine, but the
announcer's patter was awful.

Was there any point to the bit with the critter-pushing?

Heck, was there any point to Jabba showing up?  Let's see, the shot showed
him coming out, and that was about it.  He didn't do anything (like start
the race), did he?
