10.  First 15 minutes of the movie are goofy -- even Jedi ought to
show some fear or sense of urgency once in a while.  It was
like the characters had read the script and knew exactly where
things were headed.  And Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan just happened to
be carrying underwater-breathing apparatus in their pockets in
case they wound up in the waters of Naboo?  Hmm, seems a bit
     too convenient.  :o|

They're Jedi they don't show anger or fear.

When DM attacked QGJ on Tatooine, QCJ exhibited a believable sense of
urgency as well as a fear for Anakin's life.  And after DM impales QCJ in
the final battle, OWK is extremely upset; he bounces in place, extremely
agitated, waiting for the force field to retract, and he can't wait for the
chance to rip into DM with his lightsaber.

Those two scenes were believable for me.  The scene at the beginning wasn't
believable for me.  Maybe I should read the book.  The beginning scene in
the movie just seemed like a corny Batman & Robin "we'll get out of this
smugly and unscathed" type of scene.

8.  Obi-Wan defeated Maul a bit too easily after he recovered (although
it's possible that the expression on Maul's face before Obi-Wan
jumped up was Maul Force-sensing his own demise...hmm).  (:-|

Hmm, I think not. If you were Maul and you were looking down at your
enemy as he is about to die, and then he is suddenly behind you with
a lightsaber in his hand I don't think you would have been exactly
prepared. There is that shock factor.

The shock factor was nice, but DM had a good full 1 to 2 seconds of elapsed
time from the point that QGJ's lightsaber lept from the floor and flew into
OWK's hand and the point that OWK was flipping in the air and landing behind
DM.  It wasn't believable.  DM in real-life would have stepped backwards or
at least raised his lightsaber again to fight by the time OWK was above him
in the air.  Given how fast and perfect and beautiful DM's fighting ability
had been up until that point, in fact, DM should actually have been able to
rip OWK to shreds in mid-leap.

Maybe it plays out better in the book (I haven't read it yet).  When you do
finally see the movie, maybe you'll agree that it was timed so as to shock
the audience rather than to shock DM.  A movie audience can be shocked by
something that happens in 1-2 seconds, but I'll never believe that a Jedi or
Sith lord could be shocked by anything that happens in a span of time that
long.  The only explanation that makes sense to me is that DM was stunned by
seeing his life flash before him as he saw a few seconds into the future.

1.  Jar-Jar and his doofus voice nearly ruin the movie!  The only thing
he added to the movie was a couple minutes of cuss-bonding for 3P0
& R2. JJB is far, far, far, more annoying than any Ewok ever was...
X^o  In fact, none of the Gungans in the battle at the end added
anything to the story...it was Anakin alone who destroyed all of the
battle droids (albeit indirectly and somewhat fortuitously).  :-I

Isn't Star Wars supposed to have some humor in it??

Yeah, it is, and GL has the final word, of course, but I thought it was
disappointing that GL resorted to cheap cartoon and slapstick humor with JJB
rather than the more cerebral/subtle humor in Ep4.  I suppose it was a
marketing decision.

Ewoks weren't anoying.

Certainly not like Jar-Jar they weren't!  I actually liked their voices and
their language.  But many people (myself included) still found them annoying
because they were overly and ostensibly cute and Ep6 (with its cartoon
reduced graphic violence) was so obviously geared toward a younger audience
and mass-marketing.  No bloody severed limbs in Ep6 like there were in Ep4 &
Ep5.

Of course the Gungans added to the story, do you think the few Naboos were
just going to be able to walk into the hanger, steal back a few of their
ships and go destroy the mother-ship?? I think not. There needed to be some
sort of a distraction.

JJB was the only Gungan who helped the Naboo and the Jedi sneak back into
the hangar, etc., and if it's the case that the remaining Gungan army was
supposed to have distracted the TF from monitoring the Naboo palace and
hangars, that's not a believable plotline.

As far as the rest of the Gungans go in the final battle, they played no
real role:  If they'd destroyed all of the battle droids, it wouldn't have
mattered because Anakin blew up the control ship anyway; and if they'd all
lost against the battle droids, it wouldn't have mattered because Anakin
blew up the control ship anyway.

All in all, the Gungans could have been removed from the story entirely and
they never would have been missed.  DS ordered the TF to invade the planet
in order to manipulate the Senate using the Naboo, not the Gungans, and
without the Gungans, I'm sure the heroes still could have found some other
way to get back to the palace & hangars.

Oh, and you complain Jar Jar almost ruined the movie, well your'e
stupid little faces just about ruined your message :-P

Well, thank god they didn't, huh?  :-)

Still, I think it was an extremely outstanding movie!

What?!?! Talk about contradictory! You found fault with a quarter of the
major stuff, but you still call it outstanding?!?!

Yeah.

Maybe you ought to read the book, it was the best SW book I've read & it
was also the 12th. You know books and movies never really compare, even
if the book's based on the movie :)

I probably should, at some point.  Most of my nits seem to be with the
visuals (the cartoony alien animation, that is, not the hard-core ships &
lasers SFX) and the sounds (voices, acting, etc.) -- none of those would be
ruined in the book.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the movie a third time!  I loved it more than
Empire and Jedi!  (Ep4 is still the best screenplay, though.  :)

My main peeve about Episode I was the way they left behind Anakin's mother. With the support of the Jedi Council and the fortunes of the planet, Naboo, I am sure someone could have bartered for the freedom of Shmi Skywalker at the end of the movie. (...) I believe the Gungans played an important role from a 'Force' perspective. In order for Anakin to destroy the control ship, the Force must have been with him.
