Your comment about the buffers is correct.  However I had a mint in sealed box
and it did not have the buffers in it.  I opened it about a year ago and never
put it together.  I am finding that sets do not match instructions exactly all
the time, mostly in small parts like that, that makes little difference to the
overall playability of the set.  Most of my sets from 1974 on were bought by me
and many only recently opened.  This one I got from Masgarn du Nord in Denmark.
I have found that the buffers have been left out of other train sets so it might
have even been a printing mistake.  Who knows, I just do these from my sets and
the directions. Had this not been in a sealed condition I would not have
mentioned the correction.

This sounds very surprising! I have one 7720 with those buffers, but don't know
whether they're original since I bought the set second-hand.
I have also one 7722 with 4 black single buffers. I got it MISB for Christmas
1991, it was my first LEGO train. I remember my surprise that on a 4-vehicle
train 3 types of buffers were found.
When the buffer beam and buffered 6x16-train-base-with-motor-cutout were
introduced, the single buffers were needed only for the battery box cars. Maybe
TLC ran short of them so some batches of sets (including yours) came out without
single buffers.
For the Peeron inventory: In my opinion, the buffers should be kept there, only
with a note added. I find these parts very useful so I want to see them in
Peeron-checked auctions :-)

As for the 1980s' trains, there is another thing which would be nice to correct:
the track sleeper plates. The two versions look very similar but they have
different numbers (767 is probably an LDraw number for parts with unknown mold
number, but 4166 is a known mold number). I would renumber them 4166a and 4166b
and add notes to the sets (especially the 785x track sets).

Thanks for the note, I have found other rather strange things in the early 80
sets.  There is a round brick 1x1 open stud transgreen, that had a white coating
on the inside.  I have seen this in three sets.  Also the minifig airtanks in
red and yellow are a different shade and maybe a different plastic.  I have also
found this in the 1x1 plates with vertical clip.
As for the trains, I have come accross a noise surpressor center rail.  It has a
little box on it and only marked with a little star on the back.
I think that much of the problems with inventories is Lego using whatever parts
were available at the time.  And it appears that they kept no records.  I found
a very strange thing in one set.  Someone at Lego had a sense of humor.  Inside
the sealed box and sealed bag was a Mega Block.  Unhappy employee?
Take care
John P
