This sounds very surprising! I have one 7720 with those buffers, but don't know
whether they're original since I bought the set second-hand.
I have also one 7722 with 4 black single buffers. I got it MISB for Christmas
1991, it was my first LEGO train. I remember my surprise that on a 4-vehicle
train 3 types of buffers were found.
When the buffer beam and buffered 6x16-train-base-with-motor-cutout were
introduced, the single buffers were needed only for the battery box cars. Maybe
TLC ran short of them so some batches of sets (including yours) came out without
single buffers.
For the Peeron inventory: In my opinion, the buffers should be kept there, only
with a note added. I find these parts very useful so I want to see them in
Peeron-checked auctions :-)
As for the 1980s' trains, there is another thing which would be nice to correct:
the track sleeper plates. The two versions look very similar but they have
different numbers (767 is probably an LDraw number for parts with unknown mold
number, but 4166 is a known mold number). I would renumber them 4166a and 4166b
and add notes to the sets (especially the 785x track sets).
