In lugnet.general, Allan Bedford writes:
They are trying to grow their 'brand'.  Unfortunately they are doing it at
the expense of their core product.  20 years from now, no one will buy LEGO
watches, pens, or napsacks if the kids of today aren't offered well-designed
LEGO sets TODAY.  Because remember, the parents of tomorrow, are the kids of
today.  Part of the reason LEGO still sells today is that there are so many
sentimental parents around who get their kids started on LEGO at an early
age...

Exactly!  And that reminds me of another anecdote I forgot to mention in my
earlier post:

With pics of my Town and a few small models around my cubicle, people
throught the company I work for have learned of my hobby.  During the past
few weeks, with the holiday season, a few co-workers from the warehouse have
wandered in asking for advice about what LEGO to buy for their kids and
where to shop.  These parents expressed an interest in starting their
children on a quality hobby of their own.

In showing them the S@H catalogue and describing the current themes, these
parents were surprised (almost annoyed) that there were no basic sets to
select from.  "No, I just want something so my son can build what he wants,
like maybe a house.  I don't see any Town sets here."  That's what they
said. In the end, I suggested maybe some bulk sets, and also mentioned
hunting for the hard-to-find 3033 blue tubs.

The point is, today's parents are those that spend the money.  If they turn
to LEGO based on their memory of something special, but then can't find it.
They could easily look elsewhere.  The above story is not likely an isolated
case, and thus it is clear that the concerns being voiced here are not only
the rants of the AFOLs online, but also of countless parents everywhere...
