I don't see any evidence of LEGO moving away from building bricks in
this article, I only see that they are moving into other areas in
addition to building bricks.

If the evidence isn't there, it's certainly in the sets they're releasing.

On the subject of the traditional technic beams, you can still find
them in newish sets like 8458 and 8466.  You can hardly construct a
large, stable chassis without them, so I don't see how they can go
away.

Which is nice if you can afford $120 plus sets.  But what about the kid who
wants to get started in Technic but can't come up with that kind of coin?

What ever happened to nice small realistic Technic (Expert Builder) sets
like this:

http://guide.lugnet.com/set/854

This set has only 200 pieces... all standard bricks, or technic
bricks/connectors.  And thanks to a solid classic design, there is no reason
this set wouldn't sell today as well as it sold in 1977.  And it wouldn't
have to cost a mint.  Think of some young kid being introduced to LEGO
through a fun set like this.... it's a nice thought.
