Nope, this is an Internet-wide problem. In fact the LUGNET situation is not
even close to the 'holy wars' being fought in comp.sys.amiga.misc and
similar newsgroups, where the same discussions with the same reasoning
happens over and over again each time with the same results.
Unfortunately there is very little one can do about it...
Once people can't convince someone of their point of view in a rational way,
it's often displaced to a personal level (the education argument for
example) that has nothing to do with the real subject in the first place.
Mostly it's a reaction of frustration (the
'they-don't-want-to-get-it-do-they' line of thought). Even when frustrated,
there is no reason to use bad language: you are writing things down, so
there is plenty of time to rethink your thoughts while in a lively
conversation, the heat might get to such a level that some words might slip
out.
I have no problem with people having contradicting opinions, I just think
there is no excuse to use bad language in posts.
