I'd build simple contraptions that aren't necessarily predictable.
Machines that move and respond are great but the fun lies in stochastic
behaviour. I'm thinking that activities that aren't at least a little
bit random are boring. Random variation on the part of any mechanical
device can be a clever trick to get you out of a troublesome mechanical
or programming design problem. I'm trusting that a random number
generator is somewhere in the NXT software...
I also think I'd otherewise be a more typical user, one without all the
fancy other languages and BlueTeeth and USBs and all the clever
electronics. Lego says they sell 40,000 RISs a year; my nephew has one.
Are young people other than the FLL kids doing anything remotely close
to what is possible? Are they doing anything more than scratching the
surface. Let's find out what the average Joe can do.
