I'm sure that we'll see more civilians die at the hands of fanatics, and I'm
sick to the guts at the prospect of a terrorist nuke or deliberately seeded
epidemic. I don't know when it will end. I don't think politeness works with
insane hatred, but I don't think bombs work either.

I truly, truly appreciate this, and I don't think the emotional intensity is
going to go away. It's another thing that's changed for all of us, maybe for
a long time.

If it is required (and let's pray the Taliban hand over bin Laden before it
is (see http://salon.com/news/feature/2001/09/18/kakar/index.html )), I
agree that those vicariously responsible should be captured, and I don't
think they'll come quietly. But ask the Russians how feasible it is to
invade Afghanistan.

Whre does it end? And where do you cross the line between justice and revenge?

I don't share that confidence. I read that the total cost of last Tuesday,
to the aggressors, was probably less than $1 million (and their lives). This
could be a global guerilla war that brings fear and death to every free
nation. It might be, and I think if it is answered with violence it is bound
to be. Terrorism is a hydra: the sword that spills blood will make it multiply.

Of course I agree. I happen to believe in the overwhelming power of
non-violent action.
