Is this in the same spirit of buying a car from a dealer cause they are
British, even though they charge x% more for that car than the rest of
Europe?

That's the manufacturers, not the showrooms...

So are Lego UK ripping us off then?

I wouldn't like to think so, but we're all aware that UK prices for
everything are higher in general than anywhere else :-( anyone got any ideas
why? It's not taxes 'cos we only (!) pay 17.5% VAT...

It was only a suggestion to those of us who feel guilty that BB might • have
bought in the sets 'cos we asked for them, and now they're landed with • stock
that we can now get cheaper elsewhere. Again: my words, no-one else's...

And nice of them to get that stock too. But that still doesnt explain why • its
20% more expensive. Are Lego UK or BB marking it up?
Or do BB get less discount than ToyCity. Perhaps as a smaller shop.

The only toy shop in my town sells for example, the 8001 for £26. Now am I
supposed to pay this in order to support my local shop. I should cocoa.

Lawrence: none of this is aimed at you or anyone else. I fully agree that if
you can get something cheaper elsewhere then so be it.

Perhaps the point is though: you can go to Tesco and get your 8001 for £16,
or at worst get it at TRU for £20, but is your local shop friendly? Do they
help locate items you want? From their point of view, are you [1] the reason
they're in business or are you just another face who interrupts them while
they're busy chatting amongst themselves?

Busy Bee provide us a service, and I know that if I ask for a particular
set, they'll do their best to find one. If you're lucky, your local shop
might call TLC HO, but give up once they're told that the set is no longer
available. BB and their LEGO rep. actually hunt out old stock from other
shops. How often can you visit or phone a shop, and the person serving you
say "I understand what you're buying... I also have XYZ in the stock room to
complement it" or "This is the stock available to us. What do you think we
should get in?" [2] ?!?

I too can go to Toy City and get better prices, but money isn't everyone's
main motivator. Anyway, by the time I've added shipping to Toy City's
prices, I might just as well ask BB to add a Euro set into my next parcel...

Disclaimers:

1. That's 'anyone', not specifically Lawrence or any other named person ;-)
2. That's not what Paul or his staff actually said to me, but rather my
interpretation of their sentiment.

With all these disclaimers, I feel the need to end each sentence with
"allegedly".

Just [allegedly] Jono .oO

(...) I have my own theory. Its not retailers and manufacturers that are to blame. Its the shoppers. As long as we seem willing to pay their price, why on earth should they sell it for any less. They are commercial organisations after all. I read a (...) (25 years ago, 8-May-00, to lugnet.loc.uk)
