Yes, you will need a regulator. But rather than spend full retail, I suggest you post to buy-sell-trade and ask for one there - many people have WAY too many regulators in their collection (especially if they parted out 4561s or 4565s like I did), (...) (...) Since this is your "first" train set...then the easy answer is "YES" you need a speed regulator to run the train. Benjamin Medinets (23 years ago, 14-Aug-01, to lugnet.lego.direct)

Re: now arriving for advance orders... metroliner and club car

(...) Stupid question time. This being my first train set coming from Pirates and Castle, is a speed regulator required to run the train? Or is it just a good thing to have. (...) My guess is that the pieces in 10001 will be structurally different. As an example, the inside of a lt grey 1x6 brick from 1993 *might* look different from a 2001 copy (I stress *might*). (...) YEs, the big difference between computer games and Lego is that Lego you can see and touch. It also tends to be more versitile because with Lego you can do anything and Sim City you can do only almost anything. (23 years ago, 14-Aug-01, to lugnet.lego.direct, lugnet.dear-lego)
