Really?  What sets had the dark grey? And yeah, I forgot about the maxifig
hair for brown (or minifig tools, etc.).

First set to use dark grey (according to Peeron) is 590 Engine Co. #9 (1977):

From the Brickshelf scan, it does indeed look like they're dark grey.

For brown, I see push-brooms in 1978:

They started showing up in "regular" pieces much later. Sorta. For Brown it's
certainly true, since it first started showing up here and there in the
mid-90's, and then really picked up in the late 90's and 00's. Dark grey was
similar, with a VERY early arrival in 1980 in some train sets (2x6 and 2x8
plates). And with a couple splinters of dark grey bricks/plates in 1996, dark
grey really exploded (moreso than brown even) in 1998:

I was thinking of largely common
elements when I considered when a colour first "appeared".  From my
recollection neither dark grey nor brown appeared in common elements (e.g.,
basic bricks) until, what, the 90's?  But regular grey was around for quite
a long time in common elements (70's at least).

Yeah, grey *brick* was really uncommon until around 1984 when the castle theme
started using it. Beforehand, it was around in plates mostly, but grey bricks
were only speckled in here and there in various sets.

Can you point to the
specific sets/years when the colours first appeared as any element, and
then when they first appeared in common elements, e.g., basic bricks?

Heh, hopefully the above works well enough :) I'm basing that 100% on Peeron,
but it does appear to be accurate, upon looking at pictures of the early sets.

Hey Dave,

Peeron is wrong on some of the 60's dates for grey.  In 1963 (Christmas 1962 to
be accurate) grey plates in 1x1, 1x2, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 and strange as it may seem
8x11 came into production.  These early ones were Cellulose Acetate.  They came
out in Architectural sets #750, #751 and #752, as well as spare parts packs
#518, #519, #520 and #521.  These plates (except the 8x11) were continuously
produced in spare parts packs until 1972.

The 10x20 (thick) base plate was produced in grey since 1955, and was the main
and most popular color (out of 6 colors) for base plates throughout the 1960's.
The 50x50 thin base plate came out in 1965 (Christmas 1964) and has been very
popular ever since (although it was shrunken down to 48x48 many years ago).

And a comment on another post, black bricks, which came out in 1962 (again,
Christmas 1961), were produced all at once in all brick sizes (except the 2x8,
2x10 bricks) and a year later in all small plate sizes.  Black bricks were
available in all these sizes in spare parts packs, but ironically were found in
very few sets until Lego trains came into production.

When I have time I will have to check out the 1950's and 1960's dates for color
parts.  There are a lot of innaccuracies in those decades, partly because of a
lack of documentation and sets available from back then.

(...) Normal grey bricks like 2x2, 2x3, and 2x4 were available in abundance in 1960/61 in expansion sets like 218, 219 and 220. Also, as far as I know, grey plates were used in 1957 in set 323, Train. Arne, Copenhagen (20 years ago, 3-Dec-04, to lugnet.color, lugnet.lego, lugnet.general)

(...) Ooo, do you have inventories for these sets? (hint, hint!) Stuff that's pre-70's in Peeron isn't terribly complete... (even pre-80's is sketchy for some stuff) Actually, I guess Peeron even accepts "partial" inventories if you know a few (...) (20 years ago, 3-Dec-04, to lugnet.color, lugnet.lego, lugnet.general)
