From the Brickshelf scan, it does indeed look like they're dark grey.
For brown, I see push-brooms in 1978:

They started showing up in "regular" pieces much later. Sorta. For Brown it's
certainly true, since it first started showing up here and there in the
mid-90's, and then really picked up in the late 90's and 00's. Dark grey was
similar, with a VERY early arrival in 1980 in some train sets (2x6 and 2x8
plates). And with a couple splinters of dark grey bricks/plates in 1996, dark
grey really exploded (moreso than brown even) in 1998:

Yeah, grey *brick* was really uncommon until around 1984 when the castle theme
started using it. Beforehand, it was around in plates mostly, but grey bricks
were only speckled in here and there in various sets.

Heh, hopefully the above works well enough :) I'm basing that 100% on Peeron,
but it does appear to be accurate, upon looking at pictures of the early sets.
