There’s an excellent reason - this statement by Jake himself:

          Keep in mind that the non-AFOL consumer (especially the kids on the
          boards) probably hasn’t realized there IS a color change. Many of this
          year’s products aren’t out yet (Harry Potter for instance, isn’t out
          until the movie time around May). If they have the products, it may
          take them a while to notice a difference. If they notice a difference,
          I’m not sure a large percentage will care. Think about what the
          creations kids build typically... many many of them are multi-, mixed-
          color. Browse the galleries in the online LEGO Club, and you’ll not
          see much color consistency.

If kids aren’t going to notice the color change, why not change it back, since they won’t notice that either? The only people who have noticed the color change are, by and large, not happy about it.

TLC has given us no evidence that there will be any increase in sales from kids to offset the loss in sales from even one AFOL, let alone thousands.

(...) Why do kids have to actually note a color change between versions A & B for it to be a worthwhile product enhancement? Do most kids buy multiple copies of the same set and compare them? So what if the gray doesn't quite match their older (...) (20 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, FTX)
