I have to agree-- I expected much more from Maul... as is he was simply
Darth Sidious' pawn, he didn't have his own agenda. Or at least not yet. He
seemed to be like an anxious kid, eager to go out and kill Jedi, without any
strategy save that which he was fed. I'd like to imagine that's more or less
true, and that Maul as a character (if left alone, or at least alive)
would've evolved slowly to create his own plans and really be a deeper villan.

After all, part of what made Palpatine and Vader so great was their own
schemes to betray the other, while using the other to achieve their goals.
And just a random rant, I wish that could have been more evident in ESB
where Vader talks to the Emperor. I would've loved to hear the betrayal
evident in both character's voices, not just in Vader's.

I rather wonder if Anakin will become the next Maul before becoming Vader--
at first with no purpose other than to serve his master, but then as time
goes on, seeking to become the master himself...

He doesn't interact with anyone else except to fight. Whereas we know that Darth (...) (24 years ago, 5-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, lugnet.starwars)
