I think that the movie was also degraded by the "super-powers" of Qui-Gon and
Obi-Wan.  Lucas would put his characters in a particularly tight spot, and
then have then overcome the situation by an introduction of incredible
abilities.

I have to disagree with this.  I have always thought that in the original
trilogy, the Jedi didn't make enough use of their powers.  Jedi are supposed to
be able to do most anything and yet they barely use their powers.  I think the
main reason Lucas didn't have them use their powers more was the limitation of
special effects at the time. (Also possibly for the plot, ie -> Luke - some
young kid, barely getting a handle on his powers, Obi-Wan -> Older, powers lost
through time, and disuse.)

Anyhow, back to the point, So when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon started using their
powers to the fullest (un sorta), I was thrilled.  The only place I thought
they could have used their powers more was during the fights against Darth
Maul.  When I think of a Jedi and a Sith fighting I would imagine that the
force is every bit as important to the fight as the lightsaber.  If you could
move things with your mind, wouldn't you shove your opponent with the force to
knock them off balance?  I would.

Ex:
Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are cornered in a corridor by Droidekas firing rapidly.
Solution: They run at warp speed down the hall-way in what I humbly consider
as the worst bit of special effects in the whole series.

I think instead of running away they should have just used the Force to toss
the Droidekas down the hallway or into a wall.  More use of the Force - equals
cooler scene.

Ex:
Obi-Wan falls oh, say 80 feet or more and lands on his shouler without so much
as a dislocation, and then takes a super-leap back up to the top.  I've seen
less cheese in old Super-Friends cartoons.

The Jedi should be able to levitate, if it had been a full Jedi, I would
imagine that he could have stopped the fall way before landing on the platform.

I guess my point is: Why can't the Jedi have super-powers?  It makes them
pretty neat, IMO.

(...) They did. At least, I know Maul did. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gonn did similar things at other points in the movies (mostly pushing around Droids). I think, though, that most of their attunement to the Force during that fight was probably concentrating (...) (24 years ago, 6-Nov-00, to lugnet.starwars)
