Okay, y'all gotta help me on this one.  I came to the States after graduation,
and my high school didn't have this...thing.  "Homecoming" baffles me.

It's so much a part of the local culture everywhere I go, and it gets everyone
all hot and excited, but no once can give me a decent explanation of that the
heck Homecoming is.  Evidently, it's a school sports thing that involves a
dance.  Also, there's a game that night, too.

But what is it and why is it such a big deal?  Some theories I have heard so
far:

A.  It's to celebrate the home team coming back from a game far away.  (If
this happens several times a year, why have only one dance?)

B.  It's to celebrate the home team returning triumphantly.  (So they plan
this dance and cancel it if the home team loses?  Do they plan on winning only
one distant game?)

C.  It's like the Prom, except that underclassmen can be invited.  (Not in
other school districts.)

D.  It's an excuse to mingle the jocks with the geeks.  (Most plausable excuse
I've heard, though it'll never work...)

E.  It's an excuse for local flower shops and tux rentals to siphon more dough
from the pockets of high school students and their chaperones.  (Second-most
plausable explanation I've heard.)

So what is Homecoming?  Why is it so important?  Is it in any way related to
how well the home team scores in the "Big Game"?  Does it have anything to do
with shuttling the local team out-of-state, ot with lighting that huge
mysterious letter on the side of the mountain?

Cheers,
- jsproat
