I think the flex tube is a good idea. I would use the 4x4 round brick with holes (peeron part #6222) spaced on an axle to make build the supporting framework. I saw the Tyco "Terrain Twister" (URL) on TV and was intrigued by the drive mechanism. It looks like it uses two counter-rotating screws/augers to move it forward on bad surfaces like sand or snow. Going from this compressor from CSSOH (the guru of pneumatics)-- (URL) was using an RC motor to power 1 mini-pump. Neat video, neat modules. I like how the stair lift biases them left and right (how? Just a tilted long tile on top?), and the tilting lift is really nice (and fast) as well. (...) It isn't the strongest, bot for this application, it keeps the cylinders in direct line with the push rods, so it works. It has the added benefit of keeping the pneumatic tubes more securely fastened to the input/output ports on the cylinder (...) Yep--did the 90 degree offset--when you watch the video, you can see the wheels pause 4 times per revolution (using compass points-- NE, SE, SW, NW)--that's when one phase is done and waiting for the next phase. 4 phases with two pistons!
