I (mostly) disagree. Of course part of my agreement is that in a way you
are right, very few arguments are ever "won". But this group can and has
been the catalyst for changes in opinion. I have certainly changed my
opinions (and you can go look at the early history in the group, looking
at my posts to see this change), and to to top it all off, the agent of
that change was Larry (though I don't remember if the explanation from
Larry which convinced me was a private e-mail [which would have been
triggered from my accidentally replying to Larry by e-mail] or a post
here).
I'll even own up to having voted for Libertarian candidates a few weeks
ago (including Harry Browne), as in contrast to a few years ago when I
wouldn't have given a Libertarian candidate the time of day. Of course
I'll also admit that I am not 100.00000% convinced, and I might not have
voted for Harry had I felt that the presidential race in NC would have
been close, and I did chose not to vote for one Libertarian candidate
because of the views that were conveyed in the "voters guide" the
newspaper printed (I wish I had taken more time to learn about all the
candidates, but I also feel that the Libertarian candidate for that
particular position should have taken better care of responding to
whatever questionaire the newspaper used to gather information - the
Libertarian candidate appeared to be a single issue candidate overly
hung up on his isse - which was a relevant issue - privacy - but there's
a lot more work that needs to be done than just focusing on privace).
What I suggest to anyone who wants to truly critically examine Larry's
positions (and true critical examination requires that one is actually
open to be convinced that the others arguments have some truth to them),
that one ask Larry thoughtfull questions which demonstrate a real desire
to learn, and demonstrate a willingness to learn.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the US membership of LUGNET does (...) (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
