In fact, wasn't the award thrown out completely at some point?

Not that I've seen, though if anyone can provide evidence of either
of these ($100k or thrown out) I'd love to see them. From what I've
been able to dig up, the original award was for almost $2.9 *million*,
$200k for compensatory damages plus $2.7 million in punitive damages.
She was found 20% "responsible" for the accident by the jury, which
reduced compensatory to $160k and punitive was limited to 3 times
compensatory for a total of $640k.

I have found one reference to a lower settlement being accepted, the
amount of which was kept secret. Also rarely reported was that the
woman offered to settle for $20k before it even went to trial but
McDonald's refused.

Was the coffee too hot? Probably so. But if I'd been a juror my main
question would have been had she ever had McDonald's coffee before?
If so then she should have known how hot it was going to be and
either gone elsewhere for coffee or waited until it cooled off some
before placing it between her legs and taking off the lid.

All I did was type "coffee mcdonalds lawsuit" into the URL bar on Communicator, and the first match back was (URL) - everyone go read it. Can we PLEASE now take this to off-topic already? It has buggerall to do with Lego or shopping anymore. (...) (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jan-00, to lugnet.market.shopping)
