I'm not sure that you are blowing this entirely out of proportion,

about as far as you can go with it.

I have already done that.  But buying stolen goods is not legal and
reselling them is even worse.  It doesn't matter if they "know" or not.
The reason they should check ID is so that they verify the person who
they are giving the refund to is who they say they are so the police
can  track down the piece of crap.  If you let them put a false name on
a refund slip that doesn't give much of a lead.

The you have a legal case - but by the time all is said and done, it won't have
been worth it.  Don't ask for a refund: demand the item back.  Be prepared with
a police report.  If they won't budge, my advice is to move on.  It's a minor
item.  Shop elsewhere if you have selection.  I wish I could tell you something
that would make you feel better, but honestly the best thing to do is let go of
the whole incident.

(...) Tim, didn't your car insurance cover the window and any items stolen from the car? After the $50 deductible, mine does--including merchandise inside the car. Thank God for Michigan insurance laws! best Lindsay (24 years ago, 15-Jan-00, to lugnet.market.shopping)
