You missunderstand me, I think. I wouldn't be skipping out because I'm not
making a buck. I'm not interested in going to an event to make money, I do it
because I love building with LEGO.
I would skip out on an event if others were making a buck off of my work without
my due compensation, i.e., charging the public an entry fee while also charging
me an entry fee.
If the event was totally non-profit - I'd pay my fee and be happy.
If the event was for-profit and the public was invited to attend for a fee, then
if I were bringing a MOC I would expect to be compensated some how, either by
free or substantially reduced admission, partially reembursed admission, or
something of that ilk.
Or if the event was for-profit and was held privately where the public was not
invited, I would pay my fee and be happy.
I just don't like the idea of paying an entry fee to bring my MOC to an event
just so the event can be open to the paying public, who only attend because of
the MOCs that have been brought for display. It's like a roller coaster builder
paying to have his ride at an amusement park and allowing the public to ride for
free, while the park owners charge the public to enter the park. The idea
leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I have *NO* issue with organizers making their spent money back. But just as I
volunteered to help make the event a success, just as I have brought my MOCs and
taken my vacation time off of work and abandoned my family, I expect the
organizers to be as compensated as I have been for their help making the event a
success, taking vacation time off of work and abandoning their families.
If I were to be involved in a large AFOL event (which I may very well be in the
future) I would never dream of accepting compensation for anything more than the
money I have spent to make the event happen (I do not count lost wages as money
spent, personally I'd be working around work time, either after work hours or
flex-time). For me, it would be a labor of love, not a love a money.
But I guess I'm just an idealist.
