There are several possible verification systems. I think we should use
several, to make it easy for as many people as possible. Ultimately though,
the onus should be on the applicant to prove his/her identity, rather than
the organizers/whoever's managing votes to track them down.

- ID scan with address, and utility bill (I know this one rubbed someone the
wrong way, but it can be _one_ method, not necessarily _the_ method)

This could be extremely difficult for the college and high school students
who are involved with LDraw.  High schoolers don't pay utility bills at all
(and some don't have IDs until they're 18), and a large number of college
students live in dorms, and thus don't pay utility bills either.  Plus, many
college students who do pay utility bills still keep their license from
their hometown.  I.e. in my case, I have a Pennsylvania driver's license,
but I go to college in Atlanta, and thus the addresses won't match up.

The same goes for credit cards.  Again, high schoolers don't have them.  And
I'm not fond of giving credit card numbers for non-purchases.  A lot of
economic damage can occur (as evidenced by a hack here at Georgia Tech; the
performing arts center computer was hacked, and data on roughly 60,000
people was stolen, including credit card numbers).  I'd like to keep my
credit card numbers limited to merchants only.

I think I've now brought up the issue of having minors in the LDraw
community and how to get them involved in the new direction that LDraw.org
is looking to go.  My guess is that many of the members in the community
either are in college, or joined the community while in college, and this
age group is probably the breeding ground for future cad members.  I'd like
to be sure that this group is able to be involved.

My personal choice is having LDraw.org organizational dues.  Much like most
people don't subscribe twice to Lugnet, I doubt people would have multiple
memberships at LDraw.org.  This was brought up in another posting in this
thread; who, I can't remember.  But using Lugnet membership numbers is a
good way to start for these same reasons.  And Lugnet is open to minors,
which makes me feel comfortable that the community is open to all.

And, uh, hello all.  I guess I'm permanently delurking now in the cad
newsgroups.  A little about me:  24 yrs old, in Atlanta.  I'm pursuing a PhD
in Materials Science at Georgia Tech.  I grew up in rural Pennsylvania,
between Williamsport and Scranton, for those of you familiar with that area.
I'm fairly new to the cad scene, and for now, I'm trying my hand at part
authoring.  None are official yet, but with some polish and patience, I
should get to the level I want to be.  I.e. able to do the Stormtrooper
helmet.  That day is a long way coming.

Just my two cents and quick intro,
John
