Brad Justus of LEGO Direct approached us last week with a bold new idea:
He would like to allow the community to design its own collection of LEGO
branded items, to be sold online by The LEGO Company through a third party
such as CafePress.com, with the proceeds being donated to to LUGNET.

Hmmm, interesting. I wouldn't go with Cafepress, however, because they don't
offer shirts in any color but white and gray, and even then, they only offer
the printable area of 8x10 on the front (not sure about the back). One of
the most common requests when I made the minifig shirt was "Hey, can I get
just the CS <or subtheme> logo on a <certain color> shirt?"

Thus, subject to approval by TLC, shirt designs could use certain LEGO
trademarks -- for example, the prominent display of a mini-figure or,
perhaps, a Wolfpack or Blacktron logo.  As the idea stands right now,
it's pretty open-ended.

Very good.

If this sounds good to you (it does to us!), there will obviously be many
logistical details to work out, but it's not too early to start thinking
about designs.

Hooray!

Details to work out include:  how submissions would be presented to TLC
for approval, how much involvement or feedback there would be from TLC
designers, where and how the items would be promoted, price points, etc.
This post is mainly to make the announcement and gauge interest.

I'm certainly interested. However, I have to wonder if TLC is going to have
their designers make a few shirts with the official logos on them? Certainly
TLC wouldn't want us to make a crappy looking CS logo, for instance, when
they could simply apply the official art themselves. Would they consider
offering official logos for download (pdf, maybe?), at which point we could
use the logo to make a custom shirt? Just some questions to consider...

I applaud the interest shown by TLC in the matter. Maybe some of my whining
did a little bit of good. ;^)

Thanks LEGO!

(...) I'm not sure if they're "set" on CafePress.com -- but Brad did specifically mention it.
