I like the idea of saying the hopper is no more then 10 blocks above
the play surface.  Now it's my problem to figure out how to tell I'm
over someone else's hopper and release a block.  It's also my problem
to build a hopper the other robots will recognize and release a block
into.

But aren't we also going with some sort of standardized hopper? Have the
building instructions posted (how LEGO!) and you have to build it and put it on
your robot, placed no higher than 10 blocks. If it's made a standardized size,
shape and colour, then touch and/or light sensors could be used to detect it.

for myself, my plan (without giving too much away) is to have a bumper on my
main 'bot, and to have a bumper on my block deliverer (which extends beyond the
main 'bot).

If my bumper on the block deliverer contacts something, it will more than likely
be the wall of the arena.

If the bumper on my main 'bot hits something, it's more than likely another 'bot
and my 'bot will then release a block--because, again more than likely, my block
deliverer extends beyond my main 'bot and should be over the other 'bot.

Now if we want to say, since the playfield is grey, that all hoppers have to be
black or white so a light sensor pointing down should be able to tell the
difference... I dunno... I think that's adding too many specifics.

And the size of the hopper shouldn't be standardized either--besides the height
(and that's just a maximum)--if I build my 'bot to the full 12 inches by 12
inches (30 cm by 30 cm), yet the standard size is 8x8, or vice versa... I think
we're adding too many restrictions for no gain--build your hopper to whatever
length and width you want.  As for me, mine is going to be the length and width
of my 'bot.

There has to be a height maximum, though, 'cause the 'bots will need block
deliverers to be above that (unless you build a catapult like device, which I
have considered--actually I was thnking lor along the lines of Rob S's 'place
kicker' that he made form the motor movers thingy we did a while back...)

Anyway, discussion is wonderful.  Even Steve H is envious of this particular
competition!

(...) hmm. not exactly true. If I were to bother to enter, my first entry would be a box. That's it. A 12 inch x 12 inch x 10 brick high box. Maybe it would have a sign that says "Put blocks here" My second entry would be an automatic pet feeder (...) (19 years ago, 19-Sep-05, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
