This has been in the news recently. Although CF bulbs do contain up to 5
milligrams of mercury (and should be recycled) the *overall* pollution produced
by the bulb manufacture and the power to light it over its lifetime is greater
for incandescents.

As for claims that they will quadruple in efficiency- it could happen, I guess.
Maybe. It would be nice. And of course there will always be certain applications
where one type of bulb is more appropriate than another; neither your fridge nor
your oven contain halogen bulbs, or sodium vapor lamps, either.

... LED's  likely would work in a refrigerator, and could be dispersed around
the shelf edges... hmm.... I may need to experiment.

Arguing against Compact Fluorescent bulbs is like arguing against the metric
system. Something only a few backwards USA'ers take seriously.

(...) ... (...) I'm not arguing against them, I'm just pointing out deficiencies that too many people ignore or gloss over entirely. Except for the dimmable fixtures in my house, all the rest were converted to CFLs the day I moved in (using bulbs (...) (17 years ago, 20-May-07, to lugnet.color)
