I'm surprised that this hasn't been mentioned yet, but 'skins' wouldn't be very hard to implement at all...in fact it HAS been done (although not in this context *). Here's a list of the types of files in the ldraw\parts directory: General parts - like 3001.dat, the 2x4 brick. Components - pieces only released by TLC as part of an assembly, like 3149.dat, the base for the classic 2x5 plate-hinge. Composite parts (...) (24 years ago, 27-Sep-00, to lugnet.cad)

OK, I have done a similar thing in my PCC which uses yellow tubing for handrails. the tubing needs to be 14 plates high so I changed the length -20 to -14*8 by hand in the mpd to get the length right, then moved/rotated the tubing around in (...) A good set of keywords and more exposure of LDList (which is very useful for finding parts) would probably benefit the parts library, but it'd be such a pain to add all those keywords... As an example of how I can't find parts in our current system, I am asking about this part. It probably exists and I missed it. - It is a member of the 2-3 finger hinge system. - it has a 3 finger hinge at one end - this joins a rod system sized rod (...) I agree with you Adam. I think the list should be trimmed down. Currently there are a lot of parts that are simply short-cuts to other parts. These should be retired and removed from the list. The reason they exist it to support (...) (24 years ago, 27-Sep-00, to lugnet.cad)
