I'm quite impressed, that is a rather ambitious choice for a first part. And
not bad at all, although I have some remarks, the part looks relativly good
already. So here we go:
A. Orientation
Parts that show a prominent length, should be oriented in such a way that the
their largest dimension points in the direction of the X-axis. Compaire for
instance the orientation of part 3228 with your 2865. We try to follow this
rule as much as possible, unless there is a very strong reason to do otherwise.
There is a trick for re-orineting parts, using the inline utility of LDraw Add-
On. I can mail you more detailed information in case you're not familiar with
the procedure.
B. Edges
Your model still lacks a lot of edge lines. When two surfaces meet eachother
at an angle, the should be bordered by a type 2, color 24 line (when straight)
or an edge primitive (when curved) Sometimes edges are already included in
more complex primitives, as in rect.dat and in most box primitives, but you
have to add edges yourself if they are not provided by these particular
primitives.
C: Rail-to-rail coupling notches
You have modelled the "male" notch as a "mirror/cast" of the "female" notch.
This is not the case, the tips of the "female" notch are rounded.
I've attached a model of the front ridge where the coupling notches are
located. You are free to use it in your part. It also gives you an idea about
the use of edge lines.
D: Color of metal parts

In my opinion, this color was only intended for the special electrical contact
studs. Lego always draws the contact sufaces of these studs yellow in their
(printed) building instructions, probably to highlite in the picture that they
belong to a special part.
Other metal sufaces are drawn in a very light, translucend kind of gray. See
for instance the building instuctions of set 4558 (page 7: wheels of train
motor, page 41: 9V staight track)
So, I think that for metal surfaces other than contact points on studs we
should use:
Chrome
LDraw: 383 (mix of white and gray)
RGB: 204 204 204 (chrome)
In Ldraw, color 383 has been used before for this purpose, see the contact
sufaces at the underside of the following parts:
6035.DAT Electric Light & Sound Brick 1 x 2 with Single Side Light
4767.DAT Electric Light & Sound Brick 1 x 2 with Single Top Light
4771.DAT Electric Light & Sound Brick 1 x 4 with Twin Top Lights
2500C01.DAT Electric Light & Sound Brick 1 x 8 with 3 Front Lights
And the wheels of:
590.DAT Electric Train Motor
Ofcourse, also some "loose ends" can be found, the following parts must have
the color of the contact surfaces changed in a future update, since they still
use color 14 (plain yellow):
4755.DAT Electric Plate 1 x 2 with Contacts
4757.DAT Electric Plate 2 x 4 with Contacts
4758.DAT Electric Plate 2 x 8 with Contacts
2986.DAT Electric Technic Micromotor
2838.DAT ~Electric Technic Motor 9V Base
Finaly, in the FAQ it should be mentioned that "Electrical contacts" is a
special case.
Greatings, M. Moolhuysen.
