I don't know if this has been published before. Just a bit off-topic, non Technic fun.... Check out page 13 of the 8040 instructions; you have to build a shovel with the dimension 4x16 studs. I'm pretty not happy with the steering centering myself. I can't get mine to center no matter what I do. Dean, the clutch idea works perfectly! I make a simple drive base like the one in your post using the clutch gear, added a couple of motors, tested it using a couple of dual-switch battery boxes, then tested it with an RCX and a remote. It drives (...) (23 years ago, 18-Aug-02, to lugnet.technic)

Thanks Dean for the great ideas and for posting links. Sounds like I should buy the Ferrari brothers book. Beleive me, I have exampined the Lugnet technic gears site and been to all the links. I've also done other searches both on tank creations and on RCX bases using treads. I have a challange for those realy good at using differentials and gears: The adder / subtractor device is not the ideal device for use in tank treads. I don't know, the <set:8460 8460 Crane>, <set:8862 8862 Backhoe Grader> and <set:8860 8860 Auto Chassis> sets are owned by the same number of people [1] and are doing very well. Yeah, it's an interesting set, it's the only Technic set without any gears (AFAIK) and the workings of the mechanism are hard to understand and far from the standard things we got used to see in other sets. On the minus side, the opening function (...) (23 years ago, 14-Aug-02, to lugnet.technic)

Wow, thanks for the pics. I am absolutely _shocked_ at how much smaller the 8475 rims and wheels are. I thought they were maybe 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the 8466/8458 equivalents. I bought the Destroyer Droid but thought is was a royal pain to build and was one of those "sometimes it works, sometimes doesn't" sets. When you folded it into a "ball" and rolled it, sometimes it wouldn't open up. Besides, I don't think it was (...) (23 years ago, 12-Aug-02, to lugnet.technic)

Ah, I see. I think you are right about the rims being smaller. They are the same style, but looking at pictures of the two types of rims I can now see that the ones on the 8475 are about 1cm smaller in diameter. Furthermore, after closer inspection, (...) Ok, I guess we have to live with those treads every once an a while, since TLC wouldn't release anything like the 'good old days'. Just checked out the movie. Very cool. your 8466 performed significantly better in terms of speed and accel. (that's just about everything...) than my 8448 did. Then again, I chose to keep all the mechanics and drive everything through the (...) (23 years ago, 7-Aug-02, to lugnet.technic)
