Hi,
I've never counted my pieces (98% technic), but from your comments, it seems
like I might be well above 7,000 since I do not the risk of running out of
most technic elements any time soon (exceptions include the newest double
no-friction pin and the like).
I do try to stick the purchases to a limited number of colors in order to be
able to do color schemes.
My trick, if you don't mind second hand pieces, is to buy the piles of
bricks offered on ebay frequently. The less specialized the listing (even
within technic), the more you get and the less you pay. In one of the best
purchases, I got 6 modern-type pneumatic cylinders, plenty of gears and
literally piles of bricks for 10 bucks. Only 3 of the cylinders were barely
visible in the out-of-focus photo attached to the listing.
So, in fact, getting significant numbers of bricks is not that big of an
ordeal (economic or otherwise). If you want new stuff, there are plenty of
MISB sets that get listed but do not sell (or sell for realyl low money),
including some with a very high piece count and attractive selection.
However, all of us make at one point or another the trip to Bricklink.

| (...) put (...) extra (...) I'm think Technic has been declining as a whole where we define Technic as the LEgo line that valued function over form. This is somewhat understandable with the car series: when 8880 came out, it was a technical wonder. (...) (22 years ago, 9-Aug-02, to lugnet.technic)
