Well, it just depends on what you need for a given situation. Studs can
really help, if you need them. If not, they're just an added complication.
But you're absolutely right. Using a beam gives you symmetry and no specific
direction for the studs. And the 1x1 width to height ratio (approximately
;-) combined with rounded ends makes them even more useful in the proper
situation.
