Yes, that's true. It's disappointing to get a set with little or no Technic
bricks in it.
I think one frustrating thing about the new pieces (and I'm thinking of
studless beams as well as liftarms, or 1/2 width "beams") is that because
there's such a diversity of sizes, it's hard to obtain a useful quantity.
It's a great thing to have so many different sizes, but getting a large
amount of 1x9 beams (for example) is not easy. Take the Technic R2D2 (set
8009) for example- it comes with one 1x9 and one 1x11 beam (IIRC). Those
parts are excellent, but you only get one each per set.

Well, they may of be little use to us, but I've noticed that it takes some
"normal" parts to connect these seeming useless aesthetic pieces. There are
always a good number of small connectors, axles, and pins used to attach
panels and flex axles. I suppose that's a small benefit.
I keep all my styling panels and flex axles in a container off to the side.
Parts seem to go only one way: in the bin, not out ;-)
