selectivly compressing the minifig. The minifig is too wide for its
height and that makes it impossible to truly build to minifig scale.
Does anyone know the reason for the selective compression?

The minifig as we know it was originally a baby in another scale.

Was it?  I seem to recall owning a few classic space sets before my sister
got her Kitchen homemaker set.  What was the release chronology?  Some time
ago there was a discussion of "first minifigs," but I can't locate it at the
moment.

(...) The minifig as we know it was originally a baby in another scale. My guess is it was adopted as-is to make large scale building easier (ie, reduce the overall scale) without designing/sculpting/tooling up machines for new figs. eric (24 years ago, 14-Jun-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.build.minifigs)
