Was it? I seem to recall owning a few classic space sets before my sister
got her Kitchen homemaker set. What was the release chronology? Some time
ago there was a discussion of "first minifigs," but I can't locate it at the
moment.

My guess is it was adopted as-is to make large scale building easier (ie, reduce the overall scale) without designing/sculpting/tooling up machines for new figs. eric (24 years ago, 14-Jun-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.build.minifigs)
