All of the IR sensors I've seen use a pulsed IR emitter so that the detector can distinguish between the emitted IR and ambient (e.g. sunlight). I am a new user of handy board. I use handy board based on Mac. After I download Handy_Board_v1.2.icd, do I need to download any other thing to handy board? Exactly, Hot wheels uses the idea as well as those machines that shoot tennis or baseballs for practice. The baseball ones use a boat trailler wheel driven by an electric motor. I want to thank the list for such excellent suggestions. Here's a progress report: I used all 4 of the "big" wheels (tires and hubs) that come with the RIS, dual-mounted (like the rear wheels on a tractor-trailer) and opposite each other. The gap (...) I find the biggest problem is the casing. It consists of a small box and two things on the outside, with tiny clips. It's these clips that always brake so I simply glue them. I have used the old style motor to shoot 3/8 inch wooden balls with a range of 2-3 feet. Used about a 2 inch shaft attached directly to the motor to bat the balls. Actually, a magnet and reed switch would be more reliable than a touch sensor. Or maybe use an optical sensor. All the commercial ball shooters that I have seen use either a pair of spinning wheels, or a launching tube with a blast of air. I believe the air blast works better with lighter balls.
