All of the IR sensors I've seen use a pulsed IR emitter so that the detector can distinguish between the emitted IR and ambient (e.g. sunlight). Exactly, Hot wheels uses the idea as well as those machines that shoot tennis or baseballs for practice. The baseball ones use a boat trailler wheel driven by an electric motor. I find the biggest problem is the casing. It consists of a small box and two things on the outside, with tiny clips. It's these clips that always brake so I simply glue them. I have used the old style motor to shoot 3/8 inch wooden balls with a range of 2-3 feet. Used about a 2 inch shaft attached directly to the motor to bat the balls.
