Also in
flying formation, the entire wing assembly can rotate all the way around the
cockpit (I assume for maneuverability purposes).  Blasters are set near the end
of each wing and thrusters are located near the base of the wing where it
connects to the cockpit. Incredible design!

According to the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, ( I haven't read a thorough
B-wing history anywhere else) The B-wing starfighter was designed as a heavy
weapons ship whose primary function was to take out small Imperial cruisers
of Nebulon-B (Rebel Medical Frigate seen at end of ESB) size or smaller. The
three main guns are in fact Ion cannons that will disable the Imperial craft
without causing structural damage. The enemy craft can then be captured or
destroyed. The uncommon design of the ship is due to the precise targeting
necessary for disabling capital ships. Yet, a starfighter can hardly sit
still for very
long with squadrons of TIEs flying around. The solution was to make the
cockpit swivel independently of the fuselage, as to provide a stable
targeting platform
while the rest of the ship can swivel and dodge as necessary to avoid
incoming fire. This makes for a very effective heavy starfighter, but also
adds to
maintenance headaches to keep the B-wing in operational order. The prototype
B-wing housed a crew of 2 (which I think would be very interesting to see
someone build) a pilot and gunner,  but the design was later simplified. The
B-wing was designed by Admiral Ackbar and a team of insectoid aliens known as
the Verpine.

Hope you guys enjoy this li'l tidbit of useless knowedge. :^)

(...) In the X-Wing series, it had 3 ion cannons and 3 blasters (which where always changing places on the wings and cockpit, IMHO XWA had the best configuration). The war ended more than a year ago. Ceremonies were held, medals were awarded and most of the men went home to their families, but not Aram Andrus. Sole survivor of a hundred skirmishes, he saw too many friends die at the hands of the Imperials to (...) (24 years ago, 13-Jan-00, to lugnet.reviews, lugnet.starwars)
