Additional announcements:

Tim Courtney:

James Jessiman Memorial Award - will be formally presented at LEGOWORLD as
neither last year's winner or the recepient could be here at BrickFest.

We nevertheless would like to announce the 2004 Recepient is Lars Hassing.

Starting this year, the honor is chosen by the Ldraw.org Steering Committee,
with consultation with the Jessimans

Info about LPrize:

Last week Tim spent some time at SIGGRAPH (about 25K attendees) to promote LDraw
and the LPrize.

Credits to Kelly M. and Karim N. for all their hard work on LPrize. Tim is
pleased to announce that there are several corporate sponsors. Lead sponsor is
the NVidia corporation.

Among all the sponsors there are about 20,000 USD in cash and prizes for whoever
can do the most remarkable thing "related to 3D graphics modeling applications".

Tim placed a call for volunteers to help make this happen. There is a lot of
framework already in place but there are specific needs. Marketing/public
relations, people in specific geographies to help coordinate events, content
creation, any sort of time or volunteer efforts will be helpful.

I want to thank John for doing his usual fine job of running the events.  Not
only did he build all the things used for the Mindstorms challenges, but he did
some building of his own.  I know my nephew LOVED the train mounted camera.

John built entries for all the events, but because he made the rules, and built
the 'things', he disqualified himself from winning any events.

Ocean Crossing

I'd love to hear about all the various ways people tried this one. And about
how long it took to clean up the peanuts after some of the runs.

I don't think we can answer your last question, yet...

This event was quite interesting.  There were several entries, but when the
pratice runs started (about 11:00 am) NONE of them could make it through the
peanuts.  The main event was 3:00, so several people spent several hours
rebuilding robots.

John & Gabe both had entries that were like a "walker" that used it's body, and
two outside legs to try to stay on top of the peanuts.  While John's worked fine
in pratice, it was never able to cross the ocean while it was being timed.  Gabe
had one successful run of about 30 seconds, giving him third place as one of
only three entries to cross the ocean.

Both David Schilling and I had entries that used big wheels.  Mine used
double-bend liftarms and RC Buggy motors, while David's were made of axles &
axle joiners, and were driven by a Spybot.  During the timed event, mine made it
across twice, with times of about 4 to 8 seconds, while David's entry (which was
designed and built the morning of the event) was lost at sea in all it's
attempts.

A couple entries were tripped up by the rules, because the peanuts were a little
deeper than expected.  These entries were designed to drive along the bottom,
under the ocean, and come out the other side.  However, the angle at the bottom
was sharper than expected, so they would dive down into the peanuts (really
fast, thanks to RC Buggy motors), and would hit the bottom with a loud THUMP,
never to be seen again!

Bob Hayes had one of these entries, which was a really nice wedge shapped entry.
I think he ran the robot about twenty times that day, and it never once came
out...  with one exception.  On the second of it's three timed runs, it hit the
bottom with it's usual THUMP, and then managed to continue out the other side,
in about 2.5 seconds.  It only made it out of the ocean once the entire day, but
that was exactly the number of times it needed to work in order to win!

Nice job Bob.

Sumo Chase (line Following and Sumo)

How many had specially-designed 'bots for this, as oppossed to re-programed
"standard" sumobots?

None.  All of the Sumo Chaser robots also entered the regular sumo event on
Sunday.

I think the winning robot, also turned out to be the fastest robot.

In Sunday's Sumo event, there were actually a couple robots that were withdrawn
from the competition, because there were TOO MANY robots (10?) so having
everyone battle each other robot would have taken quite a while.

The robots that were withdrawn were not actually legal entries, for various
reasons.  One was a little overweight, and the other used a non-LEGO processor.

Turns out the same robot won both sumo events.  I'm sure you don't want to hear
all the details about that robot, especially knowing the sumo event in Ann Arbor
Mi. is just a few weeks away...  :)

Neatest thing in the room based on popular vote:

The connect four robots are always very popular.  Next time, I need to move them
away from the door, so people can get into the room...

One vote for this was for Steve (not his creations but HIM!)

After Sunday's sumo event, I was also interviewed for Danish tv.  (sounds like a
breakfast show...)

It was a lot of fun
Steve

Jake's talk (Q&A is being recorded as part of the streaming video)

Community Development Update

Jake saw something he thought he'd never see..."Saw a Bionicle Awards ceremony"
Some off color joshing about shirts and moms.

"never going to hear the end of the ISD build from Kate"... We didn't have a
LEGO rep keeping time, so it's Kate's fault...

Brad says hi... he is moving house so could not be here. (just moved to SF)

The new Pirates logo is Jake's unofficial AFOL support team logo... If Jake is
going to act like a rogue and get treated like a rogue so why not be one!

Jake is happy to see how large the room is! ComicCon (in 20 years grew from a
basement to 50,000 years)

He's using powerpoint for the first time which is a different thing for him.

Jake has convinced his colleagues to give teasers out. that's a new thing!

Jake thanks Greg Hyland for all his work on the AFOL comic. It rocks. The
purpose of this one is to activate the sleepers...

It would be great to get it to be a series. If anyone knows anyone in the
business, please drop Jake a note.

Talked about While You Were Out... how can someone that into LEGO not be aware
of the community? that was the thing that got some thinking about sleepers
going. Greg and Jake had done a rougher version of this as an internal
roadshow...

Jake gave out 1400 in 2 hours at ComicCon even being very selective of who to
give them to

Most of the comics are here for you to use as outreach tools... he's not holding
many back.

If you know another language, please let Jake or Greg know. he's looking for
more languages to have it translated into

The LEGOFan site.

First: not meant to replace, Instead it's a portal. Bring traffic from a single
point of contact (which you find because you're interested in X) to many
different destinations.

There are too many destinations! So many resources, so specialised, that they
can be overwhelming.

It's the only non official website that has LEGO in the domain name. It's the
bridge between the unoffical areas that fans do and the corporate area.

it's fan owned, fan run, but with the support and approval of LEGO. Newbie
friendly, with areas for many different languages.

This avoids the perception management problem if there is a direct link from the
LEGO official site to a fan site (that the fan site is official)...

jake talked about the desire to organise similar to how LUGNET is organizing (to
be community managed and owned)

LegoFan organizing committee:
Richard Morton
Scott Costello
Shaun Sullivan
Geoff Gray
Jake McKee

legofan.com/net/org all work but .org is the primary address

Global AFOL mailing list
(too many names to type!)
A mechanism to bridge to as many different organizations as possible so that
there is a good way to reach as broad an audience as possible.

It is an experiment, so far monthly con calls, mailing list as required, seems
to be working so far.

Plugged the BIP (Building Instructions Portal) and the BIP blog. Still
experimenting with the scope. Right now it's "travels with Jake" to give some
background on his adventures and on how things go with him and the community.

Jake decided to introduce himself since he forgot. "Global Community Development
Manager"

His task is to provide a conduit between the inside and the outside. When fans
need things he tries to introduce them to resources within the company that
might be helpful. When the company needs things he tries to see if fans can give
input. In general facilitate things and do AFOL support.

(LEGO Direct is no more.. it was an experiment, a start up...) The elements of
it have been folded back into the rest of the company. Have come a long way
since 1999 when the experiment was started. You have to believe that there has
been a change in mind set. Jake pointed to the ISD "the fact that this set
exists is a proof of change in mindset". No one believed that a 3000 piece set
would sell. It's on its third run!

ISD and mindset change continued

So how do we follow that?

Next year is the 50th anniversary of the system of play.

In the spirit of this... there are new initiatives coming.... working together
with fans to do cool things!

- Bug Build
- SEE Science Center Project
- Road Show 2005
- Commercial Fan Projects
- NDA projects

Showed some pics of the Bug Build.. a master builder level building project that
involved 3 clubs. Enfield has a charity relationship with the Connecticut
Childrens Hospital, which is rebuilding some of their facility. Enfield is
donating some display cabinets, which will have bugs in them (just like kids
collect real bugs)... LEGO bugs! So Enfield brought NYCLUG, GardenSLUG and NELUG
in to build. Neat models, a trip to the company store, everyone goes home happy.

It shows progress... the PR group came to Jake and asked "we want to work with
fans, what would they want in return" and everyone went home happy! The adult
fans now look wonderful in front of the company!!! Everyone's happy. Thanks!

Another project coming up:

SEE science center Project. Kjeld personally approved this donation... it is a
model of an old millyard... HUGE!. 25 to 30 buildings in the complex and LEGO is
supplying the bricks and NELUG the building skill

Roadshow 2005

The 2003 roadshow was a big success. It was started concepting in Jan 2003.
Fairly short turnaround. The designers of events for LEGO was very very
skeptical (he's been designing events for 20 years or more) of adult fan
involvement... Jake went to a show of his as a kid.

"we want 1 tent. I have no idea what they are going to bring but it is going to
be cool!". And you know what, it worked out beautifully. So well in fact that
they came to JAKE this year and said what are we going to do this year?

This time, the tent is not going to be "off to the side" and we want some plan
in advance.... if we give you this, what can you build with it? There was a
dinner earlier during BrickFest, (with the marketing manager for the Make and
Create line) under NDA, see some new product, and talk about what the roadshow
next year will be...

That's the 4th or 5th NDA project this year. Can't say more but they're all
cool. More and more, the rest of LEGO comes to Jake!

Commercial Fan Projects - Trying to do some things on a limited scale that might
scale well in the future. can't say too much more than that. But we will have
SOMETHING by the end of year.

First LEGO League
- Kids 9-14
- Entering 7th season
- 43000 kids, 4400 teams, 18000 adult volunteers, 19 countries
- 8 week design and build period
- 100+ sponsors

A sporting event for LEGO! Go see one if you haven't, you can't describe it, you
have to see it...

PS, 18000 volunteers... there have to be TONS of sleepers in there!

Consider volunteering!

Maersk ship story.

There IS no more Maersk Blue... did you want to adjust your BrickLink stores?

So now what? S@H said what would the fans like next?

Cool things
1 - they came to me!
2 - I said Dk green or Dk Blue.. they said OK
3 - But why not just ask them? So we did
4 - and we turned it around very very fast...

So now Jake doesn't have to beat them.

So when they said "what new train" Jake said BNSF because it would be cool! And
they did. New colors, modern american prototype (never done before) neat design.

407 pieces, 39.99 USD or 29.99 Euros

No motor but two good dummy trucks, the new snowplow pieces and two motor
sideplates

Deals:

- Bulk Brick Discount program, 20 to 50% off depending on item
- MOT deal (excess inventory) Jake will post details soon

new sets coming in September and October...

Which Jake is NOT talking about. so there!

Should be a fun end of the year!

These questions and answers are on the audio transcript so I may not try to
trascribe as hard.

Q: PaB in Canada?
A: working on it as we've explained before

Q: How is Quattro doing?
A: we're happy. I personally like the line extension to complete 0-99 (Quattro
is the final piece of that puzzle)

Q; (Lenny) Which do you think is the best theme?
A: Refused to answer... He's most impressed with space because it's grown so
fast... 80 moonbase modules! wow. Train needs to one up these guys!

Q: Is the BNSF limited or numbered? and when can it be preordered
A: No, and not sure yet but soon, and it will be posted. Make checks out to Jake
McKee.

Q: Mark Sandlin - thanks for the (new classic space) hat and the store in
Seattle... Space legends?
A: There are a lot of legends aren't there?

Q: Universal colors been finalised yet?
A: Not yet... it always comes down to last minute. Danes go on vacation in the
summer... a lot.... maybe next week. Hopefully soon. I am doing my best trust
me. Sorry it has been so long.

Q: (Geoff G) Groups are developing standards.. moonbase, C3... is LEGO thinking
about incorporating any standards from the community?
A: In a lot of ways we are the "where do we put this" team. Lego Factory for
example why is that under Community Development? There are NDA projects I can't
talk about

Q: Black Seas Barracuda? re released again?
A: not sure

Q: (to Nik) How much were you paid and by who? (Nik: no comment, then asked...)
Aquazone legends?
A: (Jake) can't talk about new sets!

Q: Scott L - confirm the stores this year? (LISTED A BUNCH which I want him to
post for us)
A: Yes that's correct, 24 LEGO stores in the US

Q: I participated in a survey for Mindstorms... any new news.
A: I can't talk about new products. FLL uses mindstorms. Mindstorms HAS to live
on in some form or fashion and it is not dead.

Q: Lenny - You talked about a tipping point in relations between the company and
fans... you are in between. what do you see 20 years from now? What woul dyou
like to see happen?
A: Good question!. A continuation of what is happening rihgt now. Get fans
involved, blur the line between official and unoffical. Brake the barrier. Free
travel. Get things like the voitng the legends the hats to be routine. I love
sitting and brainstorming about what we can do. It gets better and better

Q: What can you tell us about next generation of mindstorms
A: (in danish accent) "I cant!" ... I can't talk about upcoming product plans.
(questioner repeats question)

Q: (Kai) - article in model railroader magazine.. displayed the ATSF super
chief... is LEGO continuing that direction or is it going to stay in toyland?
Great opportunity to grasp a new marketplace
A: That was a shop at home ad that was a test. It worked good but not
wonderfully. Unfortunately LEGO trains is not prioritised as one of the top
product lines. My Q back to you is why does it have to be us? ILTCO is doing a
fascinating and wonderful job already. We provide the stuff, you decide what to
do with it. ILTCO is working with the NMRA to do a huge presence at their
national train show next year! Get in front of the MR guys and we will do our
stuff!

Q; (Abner) - Over the years I have travelled a lot. I was just in Tokyo. There
was LEGO there you can't get here (the stereo for example) ... is LSAH going to
have a Japanese site?

Also any Mac Mindstorms or LEGO designer support?

A: The region specific sets and some other items... they just are not always
going to work in the NA geography. It was licensed and we can't force them to
market to NA. Maersk, and El Al... we either worked with them or in some cases
they buy ALL of them... we are bound by that. S@H does a pretty good job of
getting just about every LEGO product you can buy... sometimes they cannot.

We have to get the low hanging fruit... adding Japan is a LOT of work. We add
stores as best we can. What's the business case? what makes sense? We were not
allowed to sell the Nesquick bunny at all... that means if we sold it, that
Nestle would not move as much NesQuik as they want to sell.

As far as Mac... Mac numbers overall are just not there overall. We try our best
but we have to focus on the main market.

Q: Eric Sophie: what has it been like for you to teach your colleagues about the
fans?
A: I like the big fight... not that it's a fight but we fans are the underdogs.
trying to introduce something new to people that may think they don't need to
learn new things (about fans) can be challenging. I am over that hump I hope
though... people come to me now. I now have the network in the fans to get
things done. IU now have the network in the company to get things done. I want
to continue to hear what you say and tell you waht I can share. I love my job...
My role is to help you guys be happy! That is cool!!!!

Q: Abner - what's up with thebrickshop.com? How would we go about getting
approved?
A; that site IS authorised and under contract. They have some trademark issues.
They are dealing with legal and getting it resolved. long sytory but the
independent toy dealers came to us to see what could be done. The big online toy
sites all collapsed and caused problems. We took the real storefront
approach.... then we decided to test with a small group of people. that shop is
one of them.

End of questions.

Is it just me, or does the dark green look inconsistent in those photos? If it is like that for real, sorta inconsistent, then I’m really looking forward to this shade of green (even if it isn’t inconsitent, dk.green would still rock). I just love this time of year!

Jake made a comment that the released trains would have bricks formed of dark green, instead of having their dark green sprayed on. :) It’s just a prototype so far.

Jake also mentioned that, as a prototype, the stickers you see aren’t final.

About the stickers: I hope they change the number of the engine, as #1013 is not supposed to be a GP, but a C44-9W. Check this out: http://www.trainpix.com/bnsf/ROSTER.HTM or even better http://www.trainpix.com/bnsf/GEORIG/C44-9W/1013.HTM

It would be neat if they also provide a sticker sheet with more than one number for folks who want to run multiple units. They did that for the Super Chief and I thought that was a really cool extra detail they provided.

If they’ve already started printing #1013 sticker sheets I have a very simple solution to the problem... they can just save them and release a new C44-9W set in the near future :-)

Also, just curious which prototype folks think this new set most closely matches. I know it’s a GM EMD GP-something... GP38-2?

for example: http://www.trainpix.com/bnsf/EMDORIG/GP38-2/2359.HTM

Right on!

As to the other comment about stickers and getting more than one, I agree, I hope they issue multiple numbers, and moreover, choose them so that if you slice them up you get lots of different possible values (1013 and 2348 for example give you, with one slice, many different number possibilities while 1013 and 1014 give you far fewer if you see what I mean)...

One can only hope. But even with only one engine number available, I’m going to buy at least two. And next year: matching freight cars!

Hi Mark,

I guess I’m probably getting the context wrong here, but I have to ask: “matching freight cars”?

Do you mean the MOT freight cars, some of Larry’s custom cars, or have you heard something about some companion BNSF freight car sets coming out next year to go with this new locomotive?

Uh-oh. I hope I didn’t get your hopes up too high. I was only expressing my hopes. I do not know of any planned freight cars from TLC. But as is the case with the SuperChief: matching cars could very well be coming next year.

But like I said: I am only hoping.

The color inconsistency is due to some of the parts being spray painted.  A
few of the parts (1x10 plates, 2x4 plates, 4x6 plate that I noticed) were
real parts in the dsark grey, most of the rest (going from memory) were
painted.  One of the pieced you may not have noticed, is the 1x3x1 thin door
(http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=3821) also in dark green.
There are two or three pair.  Other interesting parts are orange 2x4 45
degree slopes, orange airplane windows, dark green 2x3 and 2x4 medium
slopes, yellow 6x28 wagon plate, and many others.

I have some better close ups I took later in the evening I will post later.
We also got to run the train (in push mode) on the main line of the train
layout this evening - it looks good.  I certainly expect to buy several of
these once they are available.

If not, can you help me understand what this part looks like?  Based on the

the case, or am I misinterpreting what you mean by 1/2.  That's 1/2 brick tall,
right?

Hmm... How best to describe it? The dimensions I gave are wrong for starters,
sorry. (typing REALLY fast to try to recover from a momentary net outage... I
was wireless and it stopped working and Calum and his intrepid crew switched me
over as fast as they could to wired but there was still a time gap)

Take an ordinary 1x2 45 degree slope. (which is arguably a 1x1 brick with a
prism on the side if you think about it) Now make it only 2 plates high instead
of 3... Change the 1x1 brick to 2 1x1 plates, and lowerg the slope of the prizm
a bit to compensate. NOW (and this is the big change and the reason I said
"half".... subtract the 2 1x1 plates worth of material so that the footprint is
only 1x1 instead of 1x2. KEEP the prism but lose the flat part. It's JUST the
slope part, no studs at all.

It MAY be the same slope as a 45, I'm not sure.

The part (paired) is holding the number boards above the cab window.

Remember this is a prototype!!!! everything is subject to change, including the
automotive spray paint on the bricks to get them to look dark green.

Anyway... thanks Larry as always for providing your timely reports of all this

My pleasure, as always.

Believe it or not, that's actually about what I was picturing, based on your
initial description.  But thank you for clarifying.  :)

It MAY be the same slope as a 45, I'm not sure.

In Calum's photo:

http://peach.mie.utoronto.ca/people/tsangc/nglcl/DSCN0887.jpg

I was looking at the pieces just to the right of the 1x1 transparent cylindrical
plate that faces front as the light. [I'm guessing the 1x1 sticks into the hole
of a 1x1 Technic brick, like the Santa Fe?]  They look somewhat like the
angle/shape of the parts holding the number boards, as you've described above.
But of course it's tough to get a true feel from just the picture, so maybe
that's another part/part combo.

Remember this is a prototype!!!! everything is subject to change, including the

Sounds good.  Spray paint is for Meccano parts, not LEGO elements.  :)

I'm guessing that it's more like the peak in that it takes a stud rather than

The new 1x1 studless slope is in this model 10 times.  6 orange and 4 dark
green.  Thanks Jake for confirming at 2:00 AM Sunday night.  The number
board is made from 2 orange, and there are 2 orange on each side of the
headlight.  Just below the headlight there are 4 dark green ones on either
side.

Yes, a lot like that except without nearly as much vertical part, IIRC the entire part is only 2 plates high. I think. I was so excited about the overall set that I didn’t put enough peering into that specific part.

If you like, think of taking a 1x2 roof peak and cutting it in half. I just can’t remember if the slope is the same, or different or how flush the slope is.

I took this piece off of the BSNF (there are actually 10 of them, two orange
on the top of the cab,  four orange and four green on the nose - see this
picture -

I believe the parts is only two plates high so it woul dnot be the same
angle as the standard 45 degree slope.

The part (paired) is holding the number boards above the cab window.

Those appear to be the same part as the ones lining the forward vertical edges
of the nose, but mounted with 1x1 headlight bricks so the blunt tip is entirely
concealed (I've included that in the LDR file as well), since the stud would
stick through the top of the slope otherwise..  All told, it should sit about
1mm short of the height of two plates.

I gave it a quick look, but it looked a bit less than a 45°.  Maybe something
between the 33° and 45°?  Either way, an exciting part.

Plus the friggin dark green.

Curious about this LEGO factory part.  My internet video feed died right as Jake
got to this part.  Can anyone elaborate on this or were there no more details?

Thanks,

This tour sounds terrific. But with 2 kids likely headed to college in a few

I remember filling out a survey about this some months back. I'm glad it's come
to fruition, it's definitely something I'll avail myself of. And probably one or
two of my kids as well, unless there's a "one per household" limit (which I hope
there isn't).

Also looking forward to LEGO Factory, whatever that may turn out to be.

I think it's great too, though I think it would do better at attracting AFOLs if
you left out the Bionicle comic book.  I certainly would not want my neighbors
to see me carrying that back from the comic book, and I readily confess that
Bionicle is the one part of the LEGO universe that leaves me completely baffled.
(Are there many adults who "get" Bionicle?  I sure don't...)

However, an AFOL-oriented LEGO magazine is a fantastic idea.  Scale train
modelers have their glossy periodicals, why shouldn't we?  The hard-to-find
elements and sets just add frosting to the cake.

I wouldn't have included it in the list, if I were creating this, but then again
we don't know the exact audience they are going after.  Perhaps they are trying
to appeal to both kids and adults.

I certainly would not want my neighbors
to see me carrying that back from the comic book, and I readily confess that
Bionicle is the one part of the LEGO universe that leaves me completely baffled.

You could always give the comics to a neighbourhood kid.

(Are there many adults who "get" Bionicle?  I sure don't...)

I don't 'get' it, but then it's not aimed at me.  I see kids who do get it and
do love it and if it's helped sales over the last couple years, then I'm all for
it.  Keeping the company financially healthy just means more sets from other
themes can continue to be released.

However, an AFOL-oriented LEGO magazine is a fantastic idea.  Scale train

My wife is a quilter.  Any given month she could (if we were wealthy) easily buy
no less than 2 dozen different quilting magazines.  I keep searching the shelves
for a LEGO mag, but of course it's never there.  :)

Meccano builders had a company produced magazine for many years.  I still
believe that a printed magazine, appealing to adult builders, is a possibility
that *could* work. Unfortunately I think this community was soured on the idea
of a printed magazine when things fell apart for Bricks magazine.  But I hope
someone rekindles that idea someday, if this mag from LEGO doesn't already begin
to do that.  I hope one, or the other, or both eventually find their ways into
adult hands everywhere.

Maybe I'm the only one who still likes getting a printed magazine in the mail,
I'm not sure.  I know I love it when the Brick Issue arrives from England.

Best regards,
Allan B.

I don't believe (from either Jake's keynote or from the survey card I
completed several months ago) that this program is targeted at adults at
all.  In particular, almost all of the questions on the survey card were
geared towards me as a parent in reference to my children.

That's right, Mike. Sorry for any confusion left by the keynote > posting

LEGO Brick Masters is targeted to and for kids.

The LEGO Club is a free, kid-oriented program. The LEGO Brick Masters is also
kid-oriented, but will be a pay-for-more type program.

Just like the current LEGO Club, LEGO Brick Masters is meant for kids, but may
be enjoyed by some AFOLs.

LEGO Brick Masters is targeted to and for kids.

Thanks for the clarification, Jake.  I'm sad to hear it, though.

I'm one of those "sleepers" y'all were apparentlny speaking about at BrickFest
(well, perhaps I'm starting to wake up in the last couple of weeks).  I'm
rediscovering LEGO and loving it.

But, I do get frustrated that the company seems (from my point of view) to be
ignoring AFOLs like me.  I too took the survey on the web site, and couldn't
even answer all the questions properly, because answers applying to me as an
AFOL weren't even among the options given.  So I got excited when it seemed that
LEGO was going to finally provide some support specifically for its most
dedicated, loyal, and deep-pocketed fans.  But alas, it's not so.  I keep
getting the impression that, ironically enough, LEGO doesn't see LEGO as a
serious adult hobby (unlike, say, the scale model train industry, or quilting
for that matter).

I have no problem with marketing toward kids -- obviously that's a big market
too.  But I really wish we AFOLs could feel some love too.

Hi Joe,

Stick around and you'll see that Lego does many things for AFOLs. Releasing sets
we want (Legends, trains), getting parts packs back in the sales mix, making
special events like outlet shopping at BrickFest. But when Lego produces
something it must have broad appeal and that means kids.

So I won't be taken aback at all if the Brick Master magazine has kid-oriented
instructions and comics in it.

The time for an AFOL specific magazine will come...

Larry, based on the setback this community already encountered with a magazine,
how far away do you think such a thing is, realistically?  How much time will it
take to rebuild some of the trust that was lost?  And who will it take to lead
such a venture in the future? I know that I would be hesitant to send any money
to anyone again.  But at the same time I think the time for such a project could
be today, tomorrow, next week.  I'm not sure it needs to wait any longer.

I wonder... what if, the magazine were more of a 'newsletter' and rather than
focus on subscriptions and glossy presentation the person(s) creating it focused
on content and participation?  I just wonder, I don't have any answers.

Best regards,
Allan B.
